History of Tiles

Viewing the Exhibit

The museum is located at the headquarters of Confindustria Ceramica, the Association of Italian Ceramics in Sassuolo, Italy. The visitor enters the hall from the left of the main entrance and circles the hall, in a clockwise direction. There are nineteen numbered exhibits. Each exhibit covers a different period in the history and development of the ceramic tile industry. Included in each exhibit are detailed descriptions of the items displayed identifying the manufacturer, designer, type of tile, technique utilized, size and date of manufacture. The donor of each item is identified.
The Exhibition Hall was planned to permit an expansion of particular portions of the exhibit to provide special coverage to particular periods of interest. The current display covers the entire range of tile types, production techniques, historical periods and artistic and design styles. The planners of the exhibit feel that this first collection has successfully encompassed the rich and varied history of the tile industry.
